Even though Geisenheim did not see any "real" snow the week before Christmas, there were several long days of no wind and cold temperatures, which allowed the frost to build and build. The really cool thing was that it wasn't just here in Geisenheim, but also in Mainz and even as far down as Stuttgart, although not as intense.

Crazy trees and bushes with frost, not snow!

The Friday before Christmas I spent the evening with Sonja, Thomas, and Jason, and we watched the Chevy Chase Christmas movie. I forget the name, but it was actually my first time watching it. Since I found it funny in Germany, it must be hilarious in English. On Saturday we went to the Christmas Market in Mainz and it was pretty great. It was probably one of the coldest days I've had in Germany, around -4C, but I handled it like a pro! I'm actually very proud of how I'm dealing with the cold over here. Not bad for a CA boy.

I haven't really taken the time to Blog about the Christmas Markets or Weihnachtsmaerkte here in Germany, but to put it bluntly, they are one of the greatest events ever. Every city that is bigger than just a town is pretty much guaranteed to have their own market, where local and non local folks sell everything from holiday goods, to winter clothes, to toys, food, and of course spiced wine. I've been lucky to frequent several here in Germany, with the short list including Ruedesheim, Frankfurt, Weisbaden, Mainz, Ludwigsburg, and Strassbourg. I might have missed one or two, but all in all they are fantastic. I've included a few pics below from random markets around Germany.

After the Mainz Market with Sonja and her family, I met up with Christian in Bechtheim and we went over to a friend of his' from grammar school, Christian, for a Christmas Party. The party was held outside in the house/wineries courtyard and the mood was 100% winter. The evening was bitter cold but Christian's family had set up fires outside and served plenty of warm spiced wine and home made silly. I wish I had taken more pictures, b/c the night was great. I met a German man who had received his bachelor's, master's, and PhD from UCLA, so instantly we were best friends. He lives in Mainz with his wife and has done quite well for himself. In our short conversation he named some close personal friends who were either high level government officials or Nobel Prize winners. Not bad for a UCLA grad, right!!
The next day Christian and I drove down to Stuttgart to celebrate Andi's Birthday. Andi and his twin sister, Claudia, had thrown a Birthday party for their friends and family, and it was great. That was also the same day that Tami arrived in Germany, so welcome to Germany, Tami! We spent that night at Andi's and then made our way to Jonas' house on the 24th for a Christmas never to be forgotten!

i like the creative shot! the bluriness of the entire shot juxtaposed with the intended use of the glass - to retain wine - is sheer genius. and the way you captured the negative space around the wineglass shows raw natural talent.
