So this morning I went with Petra to the local Rewe, another grocery store similar to Aldi. Germans are very good at recycling paper and plastic, so we took several plastic bottles to Rewe to obtain the redemption value. It is all by machine which is very efficient as long as the machine reads the correct bottle. The machine would not read about half the bottles we had to have a Rewe employee redeem each individually. The redemption value was anywhere between 10 and 30 cents per bottle which adds up pretty quick. I definitely think Americans can learn a lot about recycling and conversation from Germany.
After our trip to Rewe I started doing some work in my room before lunch. When Petra called me for lunch, she said it was only going to be a little something. I definitely should know by now that a little something is certainly not little. On a plate was a rather large piece of fleischwurst with cheese and an egg on top accompanied by a pile of mashed potatoes and some pickles. Delicious!! But definitely not a small portion. After we were finished eating she reemphasized that it was only a small lunch, and that perhaps I would want to eat something else when I go out with Thomas and Jason! Eat more…I thought. I am set for the next week! J
This afternoon I went bowling with Thomas and Jason and it was a lot of fun. I thought that I would have no problems keeping up, since Americans are born bowling champions. However, I sadly underestimated Thomas. I don’t know where he learned to bowl, but he was great. He keep throwing spare after spare and after the 5th frame or so I could not keep up. After three games he was easily about 80 points ahead of me. I did however beat the two ten year olds so I have that to be proud of right? Bowling is also a lot cheaper here than in America. Three games for the four of us plus shoe rentals was only 20 Euros or about $27. I think that is pretty good.
When I got back home I had some more time to update my past journal entries, which I am proud to say are now complete! For dinner we had awesome meatballs with a tomato sauce and cheese. Nothing fancy but plenty tasty. I am now getting ready to read up on some things for Geisenheim and hopefully get to bed somewhat early. Petra planned a surprise Rhein boat cruise for Werner and I tomorrow, and I think we are leaving somewhat early. I might also play cards with Petra tonight which is a lot fun. She taught a pretty easy German game last night, which is played with the same cards that we use for UNO. Once my German is better, I plan to introduce Germany to the world of Mao! I think they are ready for it, and if the games we play here are half as fun as those I played in LA I will be stoked.
