So today is/was my Birthday! When I walked into the kitchen for breakfast, Petra had put up a good luck sign on the door and set out three birthday presents for me along with a candle with the number 25. It was such a surprise and it made me feel darn special. Unfortunately by the time I had woken up, which was only 8am or so, Petra had already left for work at the flower shop. I didn’t want to open the presents without her, so I decided to wait until we were all together. After breakfast I decided to go back to Wiesbaden and walk around a little more. The weather turned out to be better than the previous day, which was a nice treat. The Wiesbaden Wine Festival was in full swing with lots of people mulling around drinking wine and eating good food. Everyone looked like they were thoroughly enjoying themselves. I treated myself to a nice bratwurst and roll, but the festival itself was not so much fun since I was alone. I think these festivals are definitely better when you had someone to try the wines with and go from booth to booth. I’ll be sure to have a partner for the next week one. After the festival I walked a bit more around the pedestrian zone then came home.
I made a bunch of phone calls to my family that afternoon and it was nice to hear everyone’s voice. It’s kind of weird having to make phone calls on your Birthday in order so that the calls recipient can wish you a happy birthday, but I guess its necessary when you are a couple thousand miles away. :) I had plans to meet Christian Antony for drinks at a bar in Mainz, and about 15 minutes before I am ready to leave my host Mom came back after a day of visiting a friend in the hospital. I told her I had to leave pretty soon, and she insisted that I have a quick bite to eat before I leave. She told me that some bread and meat would be sufficient and I completely agreed. But then out comes a pan and into go some chicken, then krocketten, and then some peas. The whole time I thought this was dinner for her, but really it was for me. By this time its about 7:30pm and I call Christian to let him know that I will be a little late. My host Mom and I finally sit down to eat and I quickly finish my chicken, peas, and potatoes. I think to myself ok, I’m only about 10 minutes late, no problem. Then, out comes the sausage! You have got to be kidding me I though. My quick dinner of bread and meat turned into a chicken dinner followed by sausage. I told my host Mom thank you but that I was full and in a hurry, and she insisted that I eat at least one. So I eat it fast and then again think I am in the clear. She then remembers that I have to get up early the next morning to catch a bus, and decides to check what time it will come. She can’t find it on the bus plan, so she walks with me down to the bus stop and shows me that the bus will come at 7:45am. She then checks her watch and says I better hurry to meet my friend. J I was about 30 minutes late meeting Christian, but when you have someone like my host Mom who is looking out for me every chance she gets, I don’t mind being half an hour late. It’s a classic story that makes me smile and laugh every time I think about.
I met Christian in Mainz and we walked to the same Beach Bar where I had a drink with Sonja two a week earlier. It was great to catch up with Christian as a lot has happened over the past year. We tried speaking in German for a little bit, but it really felt too strange. We switched to English and decided that German would start on Monday when we left for France. All in all it was a great but very chill Birthday. I don’t mind having chill Birthdays as long as they are spaced out by exciting ones, so for lucky number 26 everyone better start planning something special!
