This morning Sonja, Thomas, and Jason came over and together we walked into the Altstadt or older part of Mainz. The walk takes only about 20 minutes and is beautiful as you walk through the city park. Our first stop was at the bakery where Sonja works. She slipped into the back and a few minutes later came out with three great breakfast sandwiches. Each was comprised of a warm bread roll with cheese, meat, and an egg. So delicious. We then walked through parts of the old city on our way to the outdoor market. The outdoor market was gigantic and is held every Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. The market is comprised of vendors selling fresh vegetables, fruit, herbs, spices, meats, and crafts. I wanted to eat everything in sight and was upset that I was still full from my breakfast sandwich. There were so many tasty meats I wanted to try. I will definitely have to come back!!
From the market we walked to a mall of sorts, which was basically a collection of different stores in a central area both indoors and out. We stopped into a book store and I purchased a pocket size German-English dictionary which has since proven to be very useful. Outside the book store I had my first German Gelato style ice cream which was well worth 1,50 Euro. After more walking around and sightseeing in the city, we walked back home, and Sonja, Thomas, and Jason headed back to their house. It was truly a great day, and I definitely look forward to spending more time with Sonja and her family.
For dinner Petra cooked a great pea soup. I’m not usually a pea fan, but this soup was delicious especially since the evening was colder and a bit rainy. Perfect reading weather….Harry Potter here I come!
